Just came across (again) the following cartoon published by xkcd. Indeed, it's happening all around us. Not only the dependence on single random maintainers of open source code without providing any further assistance, financial or otherwise. Also the fact that the whole infrastructure is so complex that it threatens to fall apart at any given time. That and the fact that, when something fails, it takes forever to troubleshoot and figure out the cause. Believe me, I've been working providing technical support for many years now, and it's been getting worse and worse in this sense.
