This is an effort to learn about American history, society and traditions through its most important books, including not only novel, but also essay, poetry and theatre. Some may find the list of books somehow arguable, but it was necessary to make the cut somewhere and my priority was not always to choose according to the intrinsic literary quality. In some cases, I thought it was a good idea to have a book on the list simply for what represented historically, or perhaps even due to how influential it has become regardless of what one may think of their artistic value. |

Reading list | The list of books that are part of this project, spanning novel, essay, poetry and theatre, starting in the 1600s and ending in our current times. This list is limited by its very nature, so there may be books that you consider essential that do not show up here. |
Reviews | Short reviews of the books that I have been reading. In some cases, the review may be more about the ideas referred to in the book than anything else. In other words, there are times where I may be taking the book just as an excuse to write an essay about a given topic. |
Resources | List of online resources to aid in the project, including online books, chronologies, essays, etc.. |
From Puritanism to Postmodernism (Notes) | Notes taken from a book written by Richard Ruland and Malcolm Bradbury on American literature. I used this book as the basis to provide some overall introduction to the topic. |
