As far as I can remember, El Mariachi is the movie that managed to jumpstart the phenomenon that later would become known as indie film in the 1990s, a movement born outside the official channels and actually against the mainstream movie making industry. With just a little bit over US $7,000, Robert Rodriguez one of the most important action movies in recent times. Movies like Pulp Fiction (1994) and The Blair With Project (1999) would come later, and owe a lot to Rodriguez's previous success.
